Understanding Bounce & Grind
Bounce and grind are among the most misunderstood aspects of a golf club, yet they play a crucial role in how your wedge performs around the greens.
Playing with the wrong bounce / grind for your swing or course conditions can make it difficult to achieve clean contact and consistent ball flight — leading to a short game that underperforms.
During a wedge fitting, we’ll explore different bounce and grind options to find the one that best suits the way you deliver the clubhead to the ball.

How important is a wedge fitting?
A wedge fitting is very important for improving your short game. It ensures you have the right loft, bounce, grind, and shaft to match your swing style and turf conditions, which helps with consistency, spin, and control around the greens.
Do high handicappers need wedges?
Yes. Wedges are essential for all golfers, including high handicappers. The right wedges can help improve scoring by making short game shots—like pitches, chips, and bunker shots—much easier and more forgiving.
How do I figure out what wedges I need?
Start by knowing your pitching wedge loft, then gap your wedges 4–6 degrees apart. Our Professionals considers your swing style, course conditions, and most common short-game shots to recommend ideal lofts, bounces, and grinds.
Which 3 wedges should I buy?
A common and effective setup includes a gap wedge (50–52°), sand wedge (54–56°), and lob wedge (58–60°). This setup gives you versatility for full shots, bunker play, and delicate greenside shots.
Should all of your wedges be the same length?
Not necessarily. Many players use slightly shorter shafts in their higher-lofted wedges (like lob and sand wedges) for better control and feel. However, some prefer all wedges the same length for consistency—it’s a personal choice often fine-tuned in a fitting.
How do I know what wedge grind to get?
Wedge grind depends on your swing type and typical course conditions. Steeper swings or soft turf usually benefit from more bounce and fuller grinds, while shallow swings or firm turf may work better with lower bounce or narrower grinds. A fitting helps identify what suits you best.
What is the proper gap for a wedge?
The ideal gap between wedges is 4–6 degrees of loft, which usually results in about 10–15 yards of distance between each wedge. Proper gapping avoids distance overlaps and fills scoring gaps in your bag.
How should wedges fit?
Wedges should fit like the rest of your irons in terms of lie angle, shaft flex, and overall feel, but may vary in length and bounce. They should feel comfortable, launch consistently, and allow confident turf interaction.
Should I have a 58 or 60 degree wedge?
Both are good options, but it depends on your setup and short game style. A 58° wedge is more versatile for most players, while a 60° can help with high, soft shots. If you already carry a 54° or 56° sand wedge, a 58° might create better gapping.

What Our Clients Say
Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what golfers like you have experienced after getting fitted with us.
“We all play golf to enjoy it—and using clubs suited to my swing makes a big difference. Recently, I felt my irons weren’t performing, so I booked a Trackman session with John Morgan. Trackman clearly showed where my current irons were falling short on ball speed and distance. I tested various shafts and heads to find the best fit, and I’m thrilled with the new set I ordered—delivered in just 10 days.

“The whole process was great, very insightful with all the data from the Trackman and all the aspects of a club fitting carried out perfectly.
It was great to try and all the different heads and shafts. Very easy to make the decision.
All the clubs that you fitted me for, the Driver, Fairways, Irons and Putter and shaved shots of my handicap and made me a more confident golfer.”
